History

n the Third Five Year Plangreat emphasis was laid for the rapid industrialisation of our country. Establishment and development of Chemical Industries on large scale was undertaken as a sequel to this. Keeping in view the needs of this ray idly developing spectram of Chemical Industries for man power to operate and maintain them and taking stock of its man power potential in the coming years, the Government of Tamil Nadu started The Institute of Chemical Technology, the first of its kind in the State in the year 1963. (Vide G.O. No. 3044 Education date 20-12-62) The Institute had its humble start at Central Polytechnic Building and later ssas shifted to its present location in the C.I.T. Campus in 12-6-1964.

Taking note of the rich pasture for man power needs in Sugar Indus-tries in the State, the Government of Tamil Nadu added 3- y.r Sandwich Course in Sugar Technology to the Institute of Chemical Technology from the Academic year 1970-71 (Vide G.O. Ms. No. 843 Education Department dated 28-5-1970). This Diploma Programme has been wound up (Vide: G.O. Ms. No. 1160 Education (TES-2) Department dated 13-8-1990).

The phenomenal growth of Polymer Industries in the seventies prompted addition of one more course to the Institute of Chemical Tech-nology. The Government of Tamil Nadu started a 3) years Course in Polymer Technology in the year 1977-78 (Vide G.O. Ms. No. 1211 Educa-tion Department dated 28-5-1977). This course originally commenced at Central Polytechnic was aptly transferred to the Institute of Chemical Technology in January 1978 (Vide G.O. Ms. No. 263 Education dated 9-2-1978).

Considering the importance of Petroleum and Petro-chemical Indus-tries Government of Tamil Nadu started a Post Diploma Course in Petro-a ranrc chemical Technology in 1974. (Vide G.O. This course originally started at Government Polytechnic, Tuticorin was however transferred to this Institute from 1980 with a Tuticorin was hower transferred to this insitute from 1980 with a futuristic view to expand its scope in the light of Chemical Industrial complex at Manali. (Vide G.O. Ms. No.2629 Eduation dated 10.12.1980)

The Institute of Chemical Technology is dedicated to impact theore-tical and practical training to the students so ghat they become best suited to the respective process industry Chemical/Polymer.

The passed out students of this Institute are well employed in the various Process Industries all over India. Especially almost all the process industries in Tamil Nadu have students from this Institute and are quite happy with their performance Inplant operation and maintenance. A few Alumini have become entrepreneurs after their industrial experience and a few are well employed in the , forei gn countries, specifically in the Gulf.
